Συχνά η πόλη βρέθηκε στο επίκεντρο συρράξεων, είτε μεταξύ Αθηναίων και Σπαρτιατών, είτε μεταξύ Μακεδόνων και Αιτωλών στα χέρια των οποίων πέρασε τρεις φορές. Η τελευταία γραπτή μνεία που έχουμε γι' αυτήν είναι όταν έλαβε μέρος στο συνοικισμό της Νικόπολης το 30 π.Χ. Οι ανασκαφές των τελευταίων 10 ετών μέσα στην πόλη αποκάλυψαν κτίσματα της Αγοράς της: το Βουλευτήριο, μια μεγάλη στοά, ένα Ηρώο, αναθηματικά μνημεία κ.ά. Although this development was not peculiar to Greece, the Greek case constitutes an eloquent example of the way the vestiges of the past may be used to enhance the national imaginings, in a country whose antiquity is explicitly (if paradoxically) evoked as a proof of its modernity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\"A Singular Antiquity\" is an attempt to investigate the ideological strategies, somewhat improvised yet at times quite effective, through which the materiality of Greek archaeology has been employed as the foundation for the metaphysics of Greekness.
