Αναφέρεται κατ' αρχήν στις μέσες τεχνικές επαγγελματικές σχολές οι οποίες αποτελούν ακόμη και για όσους ασχολούνται με τα ζητήματα της εκπαίδευσης (πανεπιστημιακοί, συνδικαλιστές, δημοσιογράφοι κτλ) μια terra incognita. Κι όμως σε αυτά τα σχολεία φοιτά περίπου ο μισός μαθητικός πληθυσμός που τελειώνει το γυμνάσιο. Έτσι, το πρώτο και το δεύτερο κεφάλαιο του βιβλίου αποτελούν κάτι σαν \"οδηγό επιβίωσης\" στο τεχνικό σχολείο με προτάσεις και υποδείξεις για μια διαφορετική σχέση με το πιο παρεξηγημένο κομμάτι της ελληνικής νεολαίας. Για τη συγγραφή τους αξιοποιήθηκαν τα κείμενα των ίδιων των μαθητών-τριών που κάθε χρόνο στο τέλος της χρονιάς έκαναν μια ελεύθερη αξιολόγηση του μαθήματός μου. Εννοείται ότι από τα εκατοντάδες τέτοια κείμενα που έχω στο αρχείο μου, έχω επιλέξει αυτά που, κατά τη γνώμη μου, είναι τα πιο ουσιαστικά. Κατά τα άλλα, στα κείμενα αυτά έχω διορθώσει μόνο την ορθογραφία και τη στίξη. Όμως το παρόν βιβλίο αποτελεί κι ένα δοκίμιο πάνω στο \"Άλλο Σχολείο\", δηλαδή στο σχολείο που θα ήταν προϊόν μιας διαφορετικής αντίληψης για την παιδεία, την κοινωνία και τον πολιτισμό. Πρόκειται επομένως για μια \"πρόταση για\" ένα \"Άλλο Σχολείο\".
