Και όλοι υπέθεταν ότι αυτό θα είχε για θέµα του κάτι διαφορετικό από αυτό που έγραψε: ότι θα ήταν οπωσδήποτε κάτι συναφές µε τα πολιτικά του πιστεύω και, κυρίως, µε το θέµα της άγριας εκµετάλλευσης του Ινδιάνου που τον απασχολούσε µε τόσο πάθος.\u003cbr\u003eΈτσι, µαζί µε τα \"Εφτά ερµηνευτικά δοκίµια της περουβιανής πραγµατικότητας\", που εκφράζουν τα πολιτικο-κοινωνικά του πιστεύω και την πραγµατικότητα της Λατινικής Αµερικής εκείνων των χρόνων, ο Χοσέ Κάρλος Μαριάτεγκι άφησε σαν παρακαταθήκη για τους συµπατριώτες του, για τους άλλους ισπανόφωνους λαούς, αλλά και για τους αλλόγλωσσους αναγνώστες του, εµάς, \"Το µυθιστόρηµα και η ζωή\", µια σύντοµη νουβέλα, κάτι µεταξύ δοκιµίου και µυθιστορήµατος και γι' αυτό µοναδικό.\u003cbr\u003eΕνώ η αρχική µορφή του θα απετελείτο από την συµπερίληψη και τον σχολιασµό των πραγµατικών γεγονότων που το αποτελούν, σε µορφή δοκιµιογραφική, τα ίδια τα γεγονότα ήταν τόσο απίστευτα, που από µόνα τους προεξέτειναν την πλοκή τους από το κριτικό-φιλοσοφικό στο φανταστικό πεδίο σκέψης. Είναι αυτά που του προσδίδουν µυθιστορηµατικό ενδιαφέρον, ενώ η κριτική σκέψη δεν παύει να είναι και αυτή εν δράσει.
