Τα έγγραφα ωστόσο τεκμήρια της δραστηριότητας του θεσμού αυτού, χρήσιμα για τη μελέτη τόσο της ιστορίας όσο και της κοινωνίας των Ρωμιών χριστανών, δεν σώζονται στη φυσική τους θέση, στα Αρχεία του Πατριαρχείου.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eΣαράντα ένα ωστόσο επίσημα κείμενα από την πρώτη μεταβυζαντινή περίοδο, εκείνη που οριοθετείται από την ανασύσταση και επαναλειτουργία του Πατριαρχείου το 1454 ως τα τέλη του 15ου αιώνα, εντοπίζονται σε Αρχεία και Βιβλιοθήκες της Ελλάδας και του εξωτερικού.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eΑπό τα κείμενα αυτά τα είκοσι δύο, δηλαδή ένα ποσοστό 53,5% παραδίδονται σε πρωτότυπη μορφή· από αντίγραφα σώζονται δεκαπέντε, ποσοστό 36,5%· ενώ το υπόλοιπο 10% το καλύπτουν τέσσερα κείμενα που παραδίδονται από τα παρασχέδιά τους.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eΤο φάσμα των θεμάτων που αναδύεται από τα σωζόμενα επίσημα κείμενα είναι ενδεικτικό των ζητημάτων που απασχόλησαν το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο στην πρώτη και αποφαστική πεντηκονταετία μετά την Αλωση. Υπάρχουν κείμενα που αναφέρονται και αφορούν την εσωτερική ζωή της Εκκλησίας (για παράδειγμα συνοδικές πράξεις σχετικές με την εκλογή νέων αρχιερέων, καθαιρέσεις και αποφάσεις για καταδίκη της σιμωνίας), κείμενα εγκυκλίων με τις οποίες η εκκλησιαστική αρχή απευθύνεται στους ορθόδοξους χριστιανούς που ζούσαν στην οθωμανική αυτοκρατορία προκειμένου να τους νουθετήσει (για παράδειγμα η εγκύκλιος του 1477 του Μαξίμου Γ΄)· κείμενα που αφορούν άμεσα ή αποκαλύπτουν έμμεσα σχέσεις της Εκκλησίας με την οθωμανική αρχή (για παράδειγμα η αποδοχή καταβολής ετήσιου φόρου στην Πύλη το 1474)· κείμενα που αφορούν τις σχέσεις Ορθόδοξης και Καθολικής Εκκλησίας (όπως ο περίφημος συνοδικός τόμος της Πανορθόδοξης Συνόδου του 1483/1484 με τον οποίο αποφασίστηκε η ανατροπή όσων είχαν αποφασιστεί στη Σύνοδο της Φερράρας-Φλωρεντίας το 1439 περί ενώσεως των Εκκλησιών)· ή τέλος οι σχέσεις του Πατριαρχείου με ξένους ηγέτες (όπως με τον Σέρβο ορθόδοξο δεσπότη Γεώργιο Μπράνκοβιτς και τον δόγη της Βενετίας Ιωάννη Μοντσενίγο).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eΑπό τα σαράντα ένα σωζόμενα επίσημα κείμενα κάποια παρέμεναν ανέκδοτα και εκδίδονται εδώ για πρώτη φορά· άλλα είχαν δημοσιευτεί και εδώ επανεκδίδονται ύστερα από αυτοψία του πρωτοτύπου ή των χειρογράφων που τα παραδίδουν.
