Βασικό χαρακτηριστικό του προσωπικού του συστήματος σημειογραφίας είναι μια πρωτότυπη σύζευξη μουσικής και εικαστικών τεχνών, με την οποία ο συνθέτης προσπάθησε να περιγράψει τη δομή των έργων του και την εξέλιξή της στο χρόνο. \u003cbr\u003eΤο 1966, παρόλη την αφοσίωση του Λογοθέτη στο προσωπικό του σύστημα σημειογραφίας, η ξαφνική είδηση για τον τραγικό θάνατο της Καλλιόπης Δημητρίου, της τετράχρονης κόρης του επιστήθιου φίλου και συνεργάτη του Σωκράτη Δημητρίου, φαίνεται πως τον συγκλόνισε και εντελώς αυθόρμητα τον ώθησε να κάνει μία και μόνη εξαίρεση. Μέσα σε κλίμα βαθύτατου πένθους, συνέθεσε σε παραδοσιακή σημειογραφία τα \"Μοιρολόγια\" για τη νεκρώσιμη ακολουθία που τελέστηκε στην αυστριακή πρωτεύουσα. Για τη σύνθεση του έργου ο Λογοθέτης επέλεξε δύο κείμενα από τη συλλογή του Νικολάου Γ. Πολίτη \"Εκλογαί από τα τραγούδια του ελληνικού λαού\" (ενότητα \"Μοιρολόγια\", ποιήματα υπ' αρ. 178 και 194, εν Αθήναις: Τυπογραφείον \"Εστία\", 1914), τα οποία μελοποίησε εκ των πραγμάτων σε μία μόλις ημέρα, στις 6 Φεβρουαρίου 1966.\u003cbr\u003eΗ ιδιαιτερότητα του έργου, ως αποτέλεσμα βαθιάς έμπνευσης, στηρίζεται στο συνδυασμό: α) της ελληνικής δημοτικής ποίησης, β) μιας εξπρεσιονιστικής ατονικής μουσικής γλώσσας, η οποία όμως σποραδικά εμφανίζει τονικά κέντρα, ενώ παράλληλα υποστηρίζει το τροπικό μελωδικό υλικό κάθε φωνής, είτε με αρμονική, είτε με αντιστικτική επεξεργασία, και γ) του εκφραστικού μέσου της τετράφωνης εκκλησιαστικής ανδρικής χορωδίας, το οποίο γνώρισε ιδιαίτερη άνθηση και στην ορθόδοξη παροικία της Βιέννης ήδη από τις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα. Και μόνον η συνύπαρξη των παραπάνω χαρακτηριστικών, αποτελεί ένα αξιοθαύμαστο παράδειγμα δημιουργικού συνδυασμού τριών διαφορετικών ευρωπαϊκών παραδόσεων σε ένα και το αυτό έργο.\u003cbr\u003eΟι πηγές για την παρούσα έκδοση προέρχονται από το προσωπικό αρχείο του συνθέτη. Η πρωτότυπη παρτιτούρα του έργου δεν σώζεται, διότι κατά πάσα πιθανότητα δωρίστηκε στην οικογένεια Δημητρίου. Ωστόσο, βρέθηκαν οι πολυγραφημένες φωνητικές πάρτες που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στην πρώτη εκτέλεση του έργου, καθώς και η ηχογράφηση της πρώτης εκτέλεσης, η οποία έγινε υπό τη διεύθυνση του συνθέτη και στάθηκε πολύτιμος οδηγός στην παροχή πρόσθετων πληροφοριών, ιδίως σχετικά με το tempo και τις μεταβολές του. Για πρακτικούς, πιθανώς, λόγους, η πρώτη εκτέλεση έγινε από τετράφωνη μεικτή χορωδία και όχι από αμιγώς ανδρική, ενώ το δεύτερο μοιρολόι παρουσιάστηκε ως δίφωνο, με τις γυναικείες φωνές να τραγουδούν τις δύο ψηλότερες φωνές. Στις χειρόγραφες φωνητικές πάρτες το ελληνικό κείμενο είναι σημειωμένο σε φωνητική απόδοση σύμφωνα με τους κανόνες προφοράς της γερμανικής γλώσσας. Στην παρούσα έκδοση προστέθηκε και το αυθεντικό ελληνικό κείμενο. Επιπλέον, όπως σε όλα τα έργα της δεύτερης περιόδου του Λογοθέτη, δεν υπάρχει αρίθμηση καταλόγου από το συνθέτη.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eΓιάννης Σαμπροβαλάκης\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eForeword\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe output of Anestis Logothetis (1921-1994) is divided into two periods: the first (1943-1959) consists of works in conventional musical notation, while the second (1959-1994) comprises works in unconventional notation (\"graphic\" or \"polymorphic\" as the composer termed it). A basic characteristic of his personal system of notation is an original combination of music and fine arts, through which he tried to describe the structure of his works and its evolution in time.\u003cbr\u003eDespite his dedication to his personal system of notation, in 1966, deeply shaken by the news of the tragic death of Calliope Dimitriou, the four-year-old daughter of his close friend and collaborator Socratis Dimitriou, he was spontaneously driven to make an exception. In a profoundly mournful mood, he composed in conventional notation two Laments for the funeral service that was held in Vienna. Logothetis chose two texts from the the Nikolaos G. Politis collection of folk songs \"Selections from the Songs of the Greek People\" (unit \"Laments\", nos. 178 and 194; \"Estia\", Athens 1914) and the work was completed in a single day, on 9 February 1966.\u003cbr\u003eThe special quality of this work, the result of profound inspiration, is based upon the combination of: a) Greek folk poetry, b) an expressionistic atonal musical idiom, which, however, displays sporadic tonic centres, at the same time supporting the modal melodic material of each part whether by harmonic or by contrapuntal elaboration, and c) the expressive medium of the four-part male choir, whose popularity had spread to the Greek Orthodox community of Vienna from the early 19th century. The mere coexistence of the above characteristics constitutes an admirable example of a creative combination of three different European traditions within a single work. \u003cbr\u003eThe sources for the present edition come from the composer's personal archive. The original score is not saved, as in all probability it was given to the Dimitriou family. However, the duplicated vocal parts that were used in the first performance of the work have been found, as well as the recording of the first performance, which was conducted by the composer himself and proved an invaluable guide by providing additional information, especially with regard to tempo and its alterations. For practical reasons perhaps, the first performance was given by a four-part mixed choir instead of a male choir, while the second lament was presented as two-part, with the female voices singing the two higher parts. In the manuscript vocal parts, the Greek text is rendered in phonetic transcription according to the rules of pronunciation of the German language. In the present edition, the authentic Greek text has been added.
