Για μεγάλη χρονική περίοδο μάλιστα αποτέλεσαν, μαζί με το κρασί, τα κύρια προϊόντα της γεωργικής οικονομίας της, με άμεση συμβολή στην επιβίωση των κατοίκων του νησιού σε εποχές που ήταν πολύ διαφορετικές από τις σημερινές.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eΠερισσότεροι από 120 συμμετέχοντες που προέρχονται από τον ακαδημαϊκό χώρο, το δημόσιο τομέα, την τοπική αυτοδιοίκηση και τη βιομηχανία, συγκεντρώθηκαν, κυρίως από την Ελλάδα αλλά και από την Ισπανία, την Ιταλία, την Ολλανδία και τη Σενεγάλη, μοιράστηκαν τις γνώσεις τους και τις απόψεις τους στο θέμα και απόλαυσαν ένα πλούσιο πρόγραμμα παράλληλων εκδηλώσεων.
