Δογματισμοί, στερεότυπα, ιδεοληπτικές εμμονές, αδόκητες και αδόκιμες χρήσεις θεωριών και πρακτικών τείνουν να σκιάσουν την αλήθεια στη Δημόσια Οικολογία, δοκιμάζοντας σκληρά τη σχέση της με την επιστήμη της Οικολογίας, ακόμη και με τον ορθό λόγο. Συχνά, πολιτικές ηγεσίες, γραφειοκρατικές υπηρεσίες, μη κυβερνητικές οργανώσεις, εκπαιδευτικοί και απλοί ζηλωτές και ιδίως τα ΜΜΕ διεκδικούν ενεργό ρόλο ακραιφνών υπερασπιστών του περιβάλλοντος προβάλλοντας, για πρόσκαιρα πολιτικά οφέλη, ό,τι αντιλαμβάνονται οι ίδιοι(ες) σαν οικολογία.
