Η μεγάλη της τιμή, ότι είναι δηλαδή ένα από τα συνεχώς κατοικούμενα αστικά κέντρα της Μακεδονίας -και μάλιστα με απαράλλακτο το όνομά της- είναι και η μεγάλη της ατυχία. Οι διαδεχόμενες η μία την άλλη γενεές βύθισαν την αρχαία πόλη κάτω από νεώτερα κτίσματα, έως ότου επί των ημερών μας ωκεανοί τσιμέντου και ασφάλτου ολοκλήρωσαν τον αφανισμό της. Εν τούτοις η αρχαία Βέροια κάπου εξακολουθεί να υφίσταται και αναδύεται κατά καιρούς συμπτωματικά, όταν οι σιαγόνες των εκσκαφέων ανατρέπουν πλάκες αρχαίου οδοστρώματος, συνθλίβουν κερκίδες αρχαίου σταδίου ή διορύσσουν σκεπές αρχαίων τάφων. Όσα ευρήματα διαφύγουν την καταστροφή κείνται στον ωραίο κήπο του Μουσείου της πόλεως, η μνήμη όμως των συνθηκών ανευρέσεώς των επιζεί ενίοτε στις εκθέσεις των αρχαιολόγων που δημοσιεύονται στα \"Χρονικά\" του Αρχαιολογικού Δελτίου, και, πιο πρόσφατα, στο \"Αρχαιολογικό έργο στη Μακεδονία και Θράκη\" ή άλλες ειδικές εκδόσεις. Άλλες πολύτιμες πληροφορίες για τη βυθισμένη πολιτεία λανθάνουν στο αυθεντικό αρχείο της πόλεως, τους χαραγμένους με γράμματα αρχαίους λίθους, που έχουν και αυτοί περισυλλεγεί στο Μουσείο. Έχοντας υπ' όψιν το πρωτοποριακό έργο των Στέλλας Δρούγου και Ι. Τουράτσογλου, \"Ελληνιστικοί λαξευτοί τάφοι Βεροίας\", και πιστεύοντας ότι ο συνδυασμός των δεδομένων αυτών θα επέτρεπε σε αξιόλογο βαθμό την ανάδυση του αρχαίου ιστού της πόλεως, πρότεινα την αναδίφησή τους ως θέμα μεταπτυχιακής διατριβής στην κυρία Laurence Brocas - Deflassieux, τότε φοιτήτρια στο Ι' Πανεπιστήμιο των Παρισίων. Η κυρία Brocas - Deflassieux συγκέντρωνε πολλά προσόντα που την καθιστούσαν ικανή να φέρει εις πέρας το πολύπλοκο αυτό έργο: καλή γνώση της αρχαίας ελληνικής που της επέτρεπε την προσπέλαση και νεοελληνικών κειμένων, γνώσεις ξένων ευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών, πτυχίο ιστορίας της τέχνης, πτυχίο ιστορίας και, ιδίως, ευφυία, ζήλο και ωριμότητα. Το αποτέλεσμα της εργασίας της, που βαθμολογήθηκε από την επιτροπή κρίσεως με άριστα, υπερέβη τις προσδοκίες μου. [...]\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eΗ εργασία, όπως ήταν φυσικό, βασίσθηκε αποκλειστικά σε δημοσιευμένο υλικό. Σκοπός της είναι να γνωρίσει τόσο στους Βεροιαίους όσο και στους ξένους επισκέπτες το παρελθόν της άλλοτε \"πρωτεύουσας\" της Μακεδονίας, \"μητροπόλεως και δις νεωκόρου\" Βεροίας. Συνάμα ελπίζομε ότι θα προσφέρει μια χρήσιμη πρώτη προσέγγιση και στους ειδικούς επιστήμονες. Σήμερα, με την έκδοσή της, η οποία, εκτός από την ελληνική, θα γίνει και στη γαλλική, συμπληρώνεται η \"τριλογία\" της αρχαίας Βέροιας, την οποία συναποτελεί μαζί με το μνημειώδες έργο της Αργυρώς Τατάκη \"Ancient Beroea: Prosopography and Society\" και με τη δημοσίευση των επιγραφών της πόλεως (Λουκρητίας Γουναροπούλου-Μ.Β. Χατζόπουλου, \"Επιγραφές Κάτω Μακεδονίας, τεύχος Α΄, Επιγραφές Βεροίας\" [Αθήνα 1998], που μόλις κυκλοφόρησε. Τέτοια πληρότητα τεκμηριώσεως από όλες τις αρχαίες πόλεις της Μακεδονίας μόνον η Βέροια έχει να παρουσιάσει. Ευχή μου η τριλογία αυτή να καταστεί σύντομα τετραλογία με την εκπόνηση μελέτης για την νομισματοκοπία της Βέροιας, που διοικητικές δυσκολίες έχουν μέχρι σήμερα καθυστερήσει.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e(Μ. Moreover, some extremely important cultures took shape in the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. The cultures of the Cycladic islanders, the Minoans and the Therans, were followed by the Egyptians and the Phoenicians. Strong cities and mighty hegemonies arose, such as Euboea, Athens, Macedonia, Thasos and Rhodes, while the Romans had to conquer the whole region in order to cross the sea securely and extend their power further east.\u003cbr\u003eAll these civilizations, with their close inter-connections and reciprocal influences, as well as their contacts with the world beyond, constituted a strong chain of culture that endured for many centuries. Difficulties created by the sea and the scatteredness of the islands, as well as by hostile incursions from the mainland, had little serious effect on the continuity of life and communication in the Aegean. The Romans, and later the Byzantines, having created an enormous imperium, dealt with the region as a whole. The idea of mare nostrum was eminently appropriate to the Aegean, before it spread to the entire Mediterranean. These waters were always regarded as a factor of unification rather than of separation by the people living on the islands or the shores, as borne out by their rich variety of relations, common reactions and policies.\u003cbr\u003eIn the restricted space of a volume we can only give some hints or glimpses at the immense circulation of ideas, people, goods, artefacts and coins that took place across Aegean waters in ancient times.
