Όπως μαρτυρά και ο υπαινικτικός τίτλος του έργου, η υπόθεση του έργου πραγματεύεται μία οικογενειακή τραγωδία, την αναζήτηση του δολοφόνου του μεγαλύτερου αδερφού του Βιζυηνού, Χρηστάκη, που έχασε τη ζωή του κατά τον Ρωσοτουρκικό πόλεμο. Καινοτόμο στοιχείο του έργου η χρήση καθαρεύουσας στα αφηγηματικά μέρη του πεζογραφήματος και η χρήση δημοτικής στα διαλογικά. Η χαροκαμένη μάνα του Χρηστάκη ζητά να βρει το δολοφόνο και να πάρει εκδίκηση για τον άδικο χαμό του.
