Το κάστρο, ένα από τα ωραιότερα και καλύτερα διατηρημένα στον ελληνικό χώρο, \"συγκινεί με την άφωνη παρουσία του, συνδέοντας τους ειδικούς με το παρελθόν, αλλά δίνοντας στον καθένα το μήνυμα της μηδαμινότητάς του και της μελλοντικής ερημιάς\", όπως σημειώνει ο κυριότερος μελετητής της ιστορίας του, ο αείμνηστος Απόστολος Βακαλόπουλος.\u003cbr\u003eΗ θέση του κάστρου στο λόφο που ελέγχει το δρόμο προς την είσοδο της κλεισούρας των Τεμπών, τη στρατηγική δίοδο προς τη νότια Ελλάδα, ήταν επόμενο να μη μείνει απαρατήρητη κατά την αρχαιότητα και ιδίως κατά την ταραγμένη από μετακινήσεις πληθυσμών βυζαντινή περίοδο. Στη μεταβυζαντινή όμως περίοδο, μετά ιδίως την καθιέρωση της πυρίτιδας και τη βαθμιαία τελειοποίηση των πυροβόλων όπλων, η σημασία του κάστρου υποβαθμίζεται και περιορίζεται στην άμυνα κατά των πειρατών του Αιγαίου και των επιθέσεων των κλεφταρματολών. Στις αρχές του 190υ αιώνα επισημαίνεται από στρατιωτικούς συμβούλους των Τούρκων ότι το κάστρο \"το δεσπόζουν τα κοντινά υψώματα, απ' όπου θα μπορούσε να χτυπηθεί με επιτυχία\".
