Και είναι αλήθεια ότι το Πήλιο και η θάλασσα δεν επηρέασαν μόνο με τη φυσική τους αισθητική αλλά συνέβαλαν επίσης στη διαμόρφωση της οικονομικής και κοινωνικής φυσιογνωμίας της πόλης, ιδιαίτερα κατά τις πρώτες δεκαετίες της συγκρότησής της.\u003cbr\u003eΗ πόλη του Βόλου είναι νέα. Δημιουργείται στο πρώτο μισό του 19ου αιώνα, την περίοδο απαρχής της εμφάνισης του αστικού φαινομένου στην Ελλάδα. Ο χαρακτήρας της ήταν αρχικά εμπορικός, αφού τον κυριότερο λόγο κατοίκησης αποτελούσε η ύπαρξη φυσικού λιμανιού που εξυπηρετούσε τα εμπορικά συμφέροντα των πρώτων οικιστών, μιας ομάδας εμπόρων, με προέλευση το Πήλιο αλλά και τα γνωστά τότε κέντρα του παροικιακού ελληνισμού.\u003cbr\u003eΈως αυτή την περίοδο, στην ευρύτερη περιοχή λειτουργούσαν δύο πόλοι που συγκέντρωναν το σύνολο των δραστηριοτήτων: το φρούριο, στη σημερινή συνοικία των Αγίων Θεοδώρων, έδρα της οθωμανικής διοίκησης, και οι οικισμοί του Πηλίου, σημαντικά κέντρα του νεοελληνικού διαφωτισμού. It is true that Pelion and the sea have not only influenced the physical aesthetics of the city, they have also contributed significantly to shaping its economic and social character, especially during the early decades.\u003cbr\u003eVolos is a young city. It was established in the first half of the 19th century, when the phenomenon of urban growth or urbanism first appeared in the region. It was initially commercial in nature, since the main reason for living there was the existence of the natural harbour that served the commercial interests of its early settlers, a group of merchants who had come from Pelion and from centres of the Hellenic Diaspora.\u003cbr\u003eUp to that time, there were two main focal points for all activities in the region: a) the citadel or fortress, once seat of the Ottoman administration, in today's district of Ayii Theodori, and b) the communities of Pelion, which were important centres of the neo-Hellenic Enlightenment.
